The Guiding Principles on Gender Equality and Human Rights in the Energy Transition

The Guiding Principles on Gender Equality and Human Rights in the Energy Transition aim to serve as a collective legal reference tool, synthesizing international human rights standards for a fair and just shift to renewable energy. Designed to provide clear, authoritative language and legal sources, this initiative seeks to embed human rights and gender equality at the core of energy policies and frameworks worldwide.

This resource is a living document, evolving through a collaborative process involving activists, experts, communities, rights holders, and other key stakeholders working to transform energy systems. Its first draft represents the culmination of three years of in-depth research on the intersections of energy, gender, and human rights. It incorporates insights from three rounds of virtual consultations with leading activists and experts, along with rigorous legal reviews by academic professionals. Even so, the Guiding Principles remain open to continuous input and refinement as we gather feedback from diverse sectors.

The development process is widely participatory, seeking to engage voices from across the globe who are committed to reimagining energy systems in ways that are inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.

We invite you to explore the most recent version of the Guiding Principles and join us in this transformative initiative. Upcoming opportunities for collaboration and contribution are available—be part of shaping a future where energy justice aligns with human rights and gender equality.
